Biography
Dr. Alexandra Hakala is an aquatic and organic geochemist in the Geosciences Division, Office of Research and Development at the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Planetary Science at the University of Pittsburgh. Currently Dr. Hakala is involved with a number of research projects focused on predicting potential changes to water quality due to fossil energy resource recovery and CO2 management (e.g., due to shale gas development and geologic CO2 sequestration activities). Dr. Hakala joined NETL as an ORISE post-doctoral research associate in the Geosciences Division, where her research was focused on oil shales and geologic carbon sequestration. She earned her Ph.D. in 2008 from the School of Earth Sciences at The Ohio State University and a B.A. in Geosciences from Princeton University in 2003, with a Certificate (minor) in Environmental Studies.
