This position is responsible for process engineering in demonstrating advanced power generation systems at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC), America’s flagship research test facility for developing new cost-effective technologies that ultimately reduce world-wide carbon emissions. This cutting-edge research center is managed by Southern Company, one of the largest regulated utilities in the United States. The research engineer will specialize in engineering and economic evaluations of carbon dioxide capture systems in both pre-combustion and post-combustion applications.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills )
  • A B.S. degree in chemical engineering is required
  • In-depth knowledge of solvent-based carbon dioxide capture processes (e.g., amines, Selexol, Rectisol, etc.) is required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are strongly preferred
  • Functional knowledge of advanced thermodynamic cycles including analysis and optimization is strongly preferred
  • Work experience (not school experience) with process plant modeling software (e.g. AspenPlus, Hysys, Promax, etc.) is strongly preferred
  • At least three years of process engineering experience is preferred
  • Experience with and knowledge of coal combustion, coal gasification and combined cycles are desired
  • An advanced engineering degree and/or a PE license is preferred
  • A strong analytical ability is needed to be successful in this position so that the engineer can easily grasp advanced technical concepts and conduct problem solving and troubleshooting
  • Excellent computer skills are needed for the analysis and modeling tools necessary for the job duties
  • The candidate should be self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple, complex project assignments in a team environment with diverse disciplines and backgrounds
  • The candidate must maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information
  • The candidate must be flexible, adapting easily to changing priorities
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Create and use heat and material balance models of advanced coal-based power systems, particularly for CO2capture systems (post-combustion and pre-combustion)
  • Analyze configurations and develop flow sheets for commercial power systems, investigating and modeling alternatives to improve power system flow sheets or modify them to accommodate other fuels or products
  • Evaluate performance, cost, and risks of proposed technologies for NCCC R&D, such as acid gas removal systems, fuel cells, membranes and sorbents
  • Help develop complete plant costs (capital and operating), performance (including auxiliary loads), and emissions estimates
  • Write technical reports and papers and present work results to internal and external parties
